Irish Turf Fire Hand-Poured Soy Candle
There is no smell like it. A small stone cottage on the west coast, the wind off the Atlantic, and a fire of cut peat smouldering in the hearth. Smoke that is somehow both earthy and sweet. The dry, mineral scent of stone walls and dark soil. A trace of woodsmoke. A whisper of whiskey from the glass on the table. Irish Turf Fire is the scent of that cottage, that fire, that quiet hour before bed when the whole world has gone soft and slow. It is the scent of being properly, deeply at home.
A smoky, earthy fragrance with proper depth
This is a luxury Irish turf fire candle for people who want a candle with weight to it. The opening is unmistakably peat smoke, dry, mineral, slightly sweet, the way real turf smells when it has been cut and dried and stacked against a stone wall. Heart notes of dark earth, leather and a thread of oakmoss give the fragrance its bones, while a faint touch of dried heather lifts it just enough to keep things from feeling heavy.
Underneath, the base does the slow work, sandalwood, vetiver, and the gentlest hint of Irish whiskey, warm and golden in the glass. It is a properly atmospheric candle, the kind you light when you want a room to feel held rather than lit. Hand-poured in small batches in our Portsmouth studio using natural soy wax, finished with a premium unbleached cotton wick, intricately interwoven with a delicate paper thread and encased in a protective outer jacket, for a steadier flame and a cleaner, longer burn than a standard wick allows.
Fragrance notes
Top: Peat smoke, dried heather, cut turf
Heart: Dark earth, leather, oakmoss
Base: Sandalwood, vetiver, soft Irish whiskey
Why you'll love it
For long autumn evenings. When the wind picks up outside and you want the room to feel like it is on your side. Light Irish Turf Fire and the whole space gets quieter, deeper, more itself.
As a St Patrick's Day candle. Properly Irish, properly atmospheric, properly grown up. A long way from a clichéd green-themed gift. This is the real thing.
For a reading chair, a study, a snug. Anywhere that wants weight and atmosphere. Particularly good with a glass of something dark in the other hand.
As a gift for someone hard to buy for. Men in particular, and anyone who tends to find most candles too floral or too sweet. Irish Turf Fire is unmistakably masculine in feel, but properly enjoyed by everyone who likes a fragrance with character.
The details
• 200g hand-poured soy wax candle
• Approximately 35 hours of clean, even burn
• Premium unbleached cotton wick, paper-threaded and jacketed for a steadier flame
• White glass vessel, fully reusable
• Phthalate-free, vegan, cruelty-free
• Hand-poured in small batches in Portsmouth, UK
The ritual
For the best burn, light it for two to three hours the first time you use it, allowing the wax to melt fully to the edges of the glass. This sets what's called a memory pool and means your candle will burn evenly every time after. Trim the wick to 5mm before each lighting. Keep the candle away from draughts, and never leave it burning unattended.
Pairs beautifully with
Irish Turf Fire Wax Melts — same atmospheric peat-smoke fragrance, perfect for layering through the house alongside the candle for proper cottage feel.
Black Cherry Candle — for layering smoke and gourmand depth on a winter evening. Properly atmospheric.
Highland Waterfall Candle — the morning after the night before. Fresh, mineral, clearing the air.
