How We Formulate Our Sleep Range

Most home fragrance brands pick a scent that smells relaxing and call it a sleep product. We do it differently. Every product in our sleep range - from the candles to the bath soak - is built around fragrance science, not just instinct. This is how we formulate it, and why each ingredient earns its place.

Why fragrance affects sleep (and why most products get it wrong)

Your sense of smell is the only one of your five senses hardwired directly to the limbic system - the part of your brain that governs emotion and memory. Inhaled scent molecules reach it in milliseconds, bypassing the rational brain entirely. That's why a single smell can drop your shoulders before you've had a conscious thought.

But not all calming-sounding fragrances actually work. Lavender, for example, is the default shorthand for "sleep" across the entire wellness industry. It can be effective - but only at the right concentration, in the right form, and with the right supporting ingredients. Chuck too much into a candle wax and it turns sharp. Use a synthetic approximation and you lose the therapeutic compounds that do the actual work.

We started our sleep range by asking a different question: not "what smells sleepy?" but "what genuinely slows the nervous system down?"

The essential oil foundation: clary sage and ylang ylang

Our sleep range is anchored in two essential oils: clary sage and ylang ylang. Neither of them is the obvious choice - which is exactly why we chose them.

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) has a warm, slightly herbal, almost musky quality. It contains a compound called linalyl acetate, which research associates with sedative and anxiolytic effects - meaning it can ease both physical and mental tension. It's softer and more complex than lavender, and it layers beautifully rather than dominating a room.

Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) is a deep, floral, slightly sweet oil steam-distilled from the flowers of the cananga tree. Studies have shown it can lower both blood pressure and heart rate - two of the physiological markers of the body preparing for sleep. It's a powerful oil that demands respect in formulation: too much and it can cause headaches. We use it at the right level where it opens and softens the blend without overwhelming it.

In our Sleep Bath Soak, we work at a 70% clary sage / 30% ylang ylang ratio. That balance was arrived at through testing, not guesswork - clary sage carries the base, ylang ylang adds the bloom.

The bath soak formulation in full

Our Sleep Bath Soak contains:

  • Clary sage essential oil - 70% of the fragrance phase

  • Ylang ylang essential oil - 30% of the fragrance phase

  • Sweet almond oil - our carrier, chosen for its skin-softening, non-greasy profile and rapid absorption

  • Polysorbate 80 - an emulsifier that disperses the oils evenly through bath water rather than sitting on the surface (which causes skin irritation and uneven fragrance)

  • Epsom salt, Himalayan pink salt, sea salt - a triple salt base that softens water, supports magnesium absorption through the skin, and creates the mineral-rich soak environment

Every ingredient serves a function. The polysorbate 80 is the one people never ask about, but it's the most important functional ingredient in the product - without it, essential oils and water don't mix, and you end up with concentrated oil sitting on top of the bath. We include it precisely because we care about what actually happens when you use the product.

The Sleep Bath Soak is fully safety-assessed under the UK Cosmetic Products Regulation, with a completed Product Information File and Cosmetic Product Safety Report. We don't cut corners on compliance - particularly for a product used on skin.

How the sleep candles are formulated differently

Our sleep candles use the same essential oil direction but in a wax-optimised form. Essential oils and candle wax are not simple friends - essential oils are volatile, some don't bind cleanly to wax, and flashpoint requirements for safe candle-making restrict what you can use and how much.

How to use the sleep range properly

Fragrance for sleep works best as a ritual signal - your brain learns to associate a specific scent with the transition to rest, reinforcing the effect over time. Here's what we recommend:

  1. Run your Sleep Bath Soak 45–60 minutes before bed - your core body temperature needs time to drop after the warm bath, which itself signals sleep onset. Add 2–3 tablespoons to warm (not scalding) water.

  2. Light your Sleep Candle as you wind down - 30 minutes before you intend to sleep. The fragrance disperses gradually through the room. Never burn a candle in the bedroom while you sleep; extinguish it before you get into bed.

  3. Consistency is the point - using the same scent in the same order each evening builds a conditioned response. Give it two weeks.

What we won't put in our sleep range

No synthetic "sleep" fragrance blends made to smell like lavender without any of the therapeutic compounds. No undisclosed fragrance mixes on the ingredient list. No essential oils used at concentrations that exceed IFRA safety guidelines.

We also don't make claims we can't support. We won't tell you this cures insomnia - it doesn't. We will tell you that the ingredients we use have a genuine evidence base for relaxation and nervous system support, that every product is properly safety-assessed, and that we formulate with the same seriousness you'd expect from a brand you're putting on your skin and breathing in your bedroom.
